As you may have heard on the news, Europe is experiencing a bitter cold and exceptionally snowy winter. This has caused some hardships in the area and we hope for the best for those affected.
On the brighter side one of the advantages of it being so cold is that the canals in Holland freeze over enough for some really intense ice skating (the first time in about 15 years!!!). It brings to mind the story of “Hans Brinker and the Silver Skates”, the fictional story by Mary Mapes Dodge (published in 1865) we all remember that one don’t we? The title makes reference to the silver skates awarded to winner of the ice-skating race that Hans Brinker wants to be in. Apparently that novel introduced the sport of Dutch speed skating to us here in the good ol’ US of A!
Back in the 1800's the canals froze over almost every year! But this has been so rare lately that today a boy of 15, Brinker's age, may never have seen a frozen canal, or at least remember one. Until this year!!
The Dutch really go first class when they fit their skates to their feet. They have some expensive skates that have removable linings that are put into a microwave and when put on shrink to perfectly fit the wearer’s feet. Many models have removable blades that allow skaters to walk more safely off the ice.
Many people of all ages want to skate but are concerned that heel problems, foot bumps or other foot and/or ankle pain will prevent them from trying skating. There are many reasons for foot pain among skaters. Nearly all causes of these annoying aches can be traced to one of the following sources:
•Any skates or other footwear that is not fitted correctly can cause foot pain.
•A medical condition that affects the way a person moves can cause or aggravate foot pain.
•Any high-impact skating or other strenuous training, cross training or recreational activities may injure the feet or ankles.
Some of the Problems that may happen are:
Corns and Calluses
Bunions
Flat Feet and High Arches
Heel Pain Problems
Achilles Tendonitis
Heel Spurs
Plantar Fasciitis
There are steps you can take to stop or prevent foot pain. Foot and ankle care begins with getting skates and other footwear that are right for your feet. In fact, one of the most important things to help you treat or prevent skating injuries of all sorts and maintain or improve your experience is proper fitting equipment.
Some skaters with foot, ankle or even knee issues use over-the-counter inserts or orthotics to help align their feet inside skates properly. Other skaters may require custom fitting and prescriptions for special shoe supports or orthotics.
If you are experiencing severe foot or ankle problems you should see and be treated by a podiatrist or your primary care physician to get an accurate diagnosis and treatment.
