President Abraham Lincoln   Dr. Ischar Zacharie-Foot Doctor

February 20th is President's day. The day when we celebrate two of our most beloved president's birthdays, George Washington and Abraham Lincoln.

Checking history archives it turns out that back in the 1860's President Lincoln had his own personal foot doctor-by the name of Isachar Zacharie.  Dr Zacharie was from England (where podiatrists are known as chiropodists) and was brought over by President Lincoln to treat his foot problems.  Although the nature Mr. Lincoln's foot problem is a little bit unclear, history indicates he suffered from bunions, corns and flat feet!!

A testimonial from President Lincoln read as follows: "Dr. Zacharie has operated on my feet with good success and considerable addition to my comfort".

President Lincoln then recommended Dr. Zacharie to other famous Washingtonians at the time and was well known there.

Dr. Zacharie was then tasked with assisting and treating the foot problems for thousands of Union Army soldiers while he was in New Orleans, Washington and Fort Monroe in Virginia.  (The Civil War soldiers traveled on foot and were issued really poorly made, ill-fitting shoes).

During the Civil War Dr. Zacharie had treated the feet of about 15,000 Union Soldiers!  Dr. Zacharie eventually returned to England and resided there for the rest of his life.

Many thanks to Dr. Zacharie, looks like he helped out in the re-unification of our great nation by providing badly needed foot treatment for the soldiers!

As you can see foot problems have been around for a long time and podiatry has been there to answer the call for solutions and treatment.
